Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
