The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
